On Nov. 4, The Washington Center hosted a special reception with Eduardo Medina-Mora, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, in honor of the Mexico 100 Champions. These partner organizations provided internship opportunities for 100 Mexican students who came to Washington, D.C., to participate in the first Mexico 100 initiative, earlier this fall.

Mora was an instrumental supporter of the Mexico 100 program, which brought 100 students to participate in TWC’s internships and professional development programs in October. Mexico 100 will welcome another 100 students for the spring semester.

President Mike Smith thanked Mora for his role in securing such an important cross-cultural initiative for The Washington Center.

“When they say, ‘we couldn’t have done this without you,’ it’s true; we really couldn’t have done this without you,” Smith said.

“Programs like Mexico 100 are the key to unifying an already strong North America so that the region continues to be a global trade leader,” Mora said. “Mexico and the United States share the busiest border in the world and make up 27 percent of the world’s GDP. Enhancing each other’s workforce by exchanging hundreds of thousands of students between our countries is a very meaningful partnership.”

The fall Mexico 100 students have transitioned to life in Washington with the help of 70 TWC Ambassadors – traditional TWC students who arrived in August and serve as cultural and logistical mentors for the Mexico 100 cohort. One of these ambassadors, Meagan Davenport (Institution: Hanover College; Internship: U.S Marshalls), said the arrangement is mutually beneficial.

“I knew I would have a global environment at TWC, but getting to know these students and learn from them adds another great aspect to the program,” she said.

Mora joined the students, TWC staff and Mexico 100 ambassadors after the program for a reception featuring authentic Mexican food and music.
