Careers in Communications Panel
The highly anticipated Media and Communications Panel, "Careers in Communications," took place at the Residential Academic Facility. Each semester, the Media and Communications Program Advisors, Jaclyn Sheridan and Jacki Banks, recruit several speakers from a series of communications backgrounds to speak to TWC interns who are intersted in pursuing a career in communications, PR or marketing.
Summer 2012 Panelists
- Shellie Byrum, Managing Supervisor at Fleishman-Hillard's Washington, D.C. Office
- Erica Fortwengler, Director of Communications and Marketing at The Art League in Old Town Alexandria, VA
- Zerline Hughes, Communications Manager at Justice Policy Institute
- Robin Mazyck, DC Bureau Chief for CBN News
- Jill Olmstead, Associate Professor at American University's School of Communications
- Adam K. Pawlus, Deputy Executive Director at Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association, Inc. (VPPPA)
- Rosemary Reed, President and Owner of Double R Productions
- Larry Rockwell, Network Operations Analyst at Clearsoft, Inc.
- Jenny Thomas, Director of Marketing and Communications at Keppler Speakers
- Vanessa Truskey, Vice President at Hill + Knowlton Strategies
After each panelist introduced themselves and discussed their current and past positions, they took a series of questions from the audience which included:
- Where do you draw the line between passion and practicality?
- Is work experience or graduate school more useful when it comes to a career in Public Relations or Marketing?
- What is it like to manage a communications team?
Once the panel ended, summer interns were given the opportunity to spend time one-on-one with each panelist and networked.
