Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon opened up his doors on Friday, June 28th for Arizona State University student Shaina Molineaux to discuss public policy and issues relating to Arizona. Rep. Salmon, a former state legislator and campaign aide, represents Arizona's 5th district. That district emcompasses the Phoenix suburbs - cities like Gilbert and Queen Creek, and parts of Mesa and Chandler. The district's major industries are manufacturing, biomedicine, and health care.

Meeting in his Rayburn House Office Building suite, Rep. Salmon and Shaina discussed several timely issues, including:

  • The recent Supreme Court judgment on the Defense of Marriage Act
  • Edward Snowden and the NSA spying scandal
  • Student Loans
  • Education in Arizona

When asked about her visit, Shaina said that she "...had the pleasure of meeting Congressman Matt Salmon to discuss the future of education in America. Currently, America is not performing at the top of global education rankings. Congressman Salmon believes that removing federal government regulations and bureaucratic standards held to public schools combined with returning control and funding authority to state and local levels is the first step to improving the education system in America. I support Congressman Salmon’s efforts and I am confident that he will positively impact America’s education system."

This visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one conversation with their elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level. It also gives our students a chance to understand how the legislative process is conducted, as well as the daily business of a Member of Congress.

Public Policy Dialogues on Capitol Hill (PPDCH), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provide students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
