Recently, TWC students attending the University of Alaska at Anchorage had the chance to speak to their senator, Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski. Senator Murkowski, the ranking member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is in her second full term and is the senior senator from Alaska.

The students discussed various issues, including energy issues (an important consideration for Alaskans,) transportation and the cost of higher education. The Senator also discussed her experiences in Washington, and fielded questions from the students about ways to stay involved in the legislative process. This visit was another way to understand the role of citizen advocacy and to demonstrate how one-on-one and small group conversations with elected representatives can affect public policy changes at the highest level. The students, all of whom attend The University of Alaska at Anchorage, are:

  • Anna Marquez
  • Curtis Leitch

Public Policy Dialogues (PPD), sponsored by the Verizon Foundation, provides students with the unique opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Senate or House of Representatives representing their state or congressional district. This is one component of The Washington Center's internship program.
