Finding an Internship
: The Placement Process
TWC works to arrange the very best internship opportunities in D.C. by coordinating with highly regarded companies, international organizations, nonprofits and key government agencies and offices. The process of arranging an internship takes time. The list of prospective internships changes from one term to the next, and new relationships are established on a regular basis to help expand the options available to students. Once potential employers have identified their needs for an upcoming term, the highly individualized placement process gets underway.
Five Steps to Selecting an Internship
- Once you’re accepted to one of TWC’s programs, you are assigned to a member of the Internship Management Team, who will send your application to potential internship sites based on your interests and the needs of the sites. While most internship sites accept your application to TWC, a few require a separate application. You will be notified if a separate application is needed (this is rare, but TWC will help you understand what steps to take). Your application will continue to be referred out until you accept an offer.
- Internship sites that are a good fit for you will review your application materials. Remember, your application will be in competition with those of other applicants; likewise, internship sites will be competing against each other to attract the interns they most desire.
- Someone from a prospective internship location may contact you by phone. This person may want to interview you on the spot or, preferably, set up a time for a phone interview. Try to arrange a time when you won’t be interrupted. Spend some time developing a few questions you can ask the interviewer about the organization to show your interest and enthusiasm.
- Prior to accepting any internship offer, it is important to discuss it with the Internship Management Team. You may have several opportunities to consider. Try to keep an open mind to internship sites you weren’t familiar with before, as less well-known sites may still provide excellent opportunities.
- You decide whether to accept or reject all offers. You are responsible for confirming your choice of internship with both the internship site and the Internship Management Team.
Because it’s individualized, the process takes time, but the care involved helps ensure stronger matches. Occasionally, a student will come to Washington, D.C., without a confirmed placement, but this situation is quickly resolved once he or she is in the city. If, once you begin your semester or term in D.C., problems arise with your internship site, TWC will work with you to remedy the situation or find a new site.
