Work and Study in the U.S.The Washington Center offers an unparalleled learning experience in the areas of business and management, trade, public policy, advocacy, arts, sustainable development, international affairs, law and criminal justice, media and communications, political leadership, science and information technology. Participants also gain the skills and knowledge needed to become young leaders around the world.  Through this experience, you’ll develop professional skills and apply academic learning to the professional world, clarify your personal goals, investigate career opportunities, and prepare for the professional life while living in another country and studying with students from all over the world.

Programs are 15 weeks long in the spring and fall and 10 weeks in the summer; each is made up of these components:

Internship

• Work in a private company, government agency, nonprofit or nongovernmental organization that fits your interests and the skills you want to learn.
• You’ll work 32 to 36 hours a week.
• Your job will have real responsibilities and feature at least 80% substantive, non-clerical work.
• Most internships are not paid.

Academic Course

• Students are required to complete one academic course that meets one night per week for three hours.
• TWC’s faculty includes adjunct professors from local universities in the Washington, D.C. area including Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University among others.

The Leadership Forum

• You’ll participate in a series of special events, lectures, panels, tours and other learning opportunities we call the Leadership Forum.
• You’ll interact with experts and leaders from the private, public and nonprofit sectors.
• You’ll complete a civic engagement project designed to help you take advantage of the resources in Washington, D.C., and create ways to affect change in an area you’re concerned about.

Student Portfolio

You’ll produce a compilation of documents that chronicles and summarizes the learning experience during your time with TWC.
