The Fund for Access & Opportunity

The energy of The Washington Center community is due in no small part to the mix of people. Our alumni, interns, staff, and faculty come from a range of backgrounds and bring diverse talents, opinions, interests, and experiences. We believe that a diverse student population is the foundation for a meaningful exploration and exchange of ideas and enhances the culture in which our interns work and live. Each semester we seek to enroll diverse internship classes, comprising many talented students representing a range of ethnic, cultural, racial groups and geographic areas, through robust recruiting efforts around the globe. This frequently involves a financial aid commitment.

The Fund for Access and Opportunity provides scholarship support to help ensure that students who have been traditionally underrepresented on college campuses have an opportunity to access the experiences and benefits available through a TWC internship program. Unrestricted contributions to the Fund for Access and Opportunity give TWC the most flexibility in providing scholarship support where it is most needed.

Alumni donors also may direct their gifts at or above $5,000 to the following fund initiatives:

  • Bridges D.C. - Scholarships for low-income, first-generation college students from Washington D.C.’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods.
  • Veterans Leadership Training Initiative - Scholarships for Veterans, plus a special Veterans Transition program series to help students re-acclimate to civilian social and professional life.
  • Leadership Initiative for Students with Disabilities - Scholarships for college students with a range of physical and mental challenges.
  • Bridges to Baccalaureate - Scholarships for students to participate in summer internships between community college completion and entrance into a 4-year institution.
  • The Muslim American Scholars Initiative - provides scholarship support plus customized supplemental programming. Contributions are matched by a challenge grant from the Center for Global Understanding.
