TWC Disability Services

Staff

Disability Services provides services directly to students or acts on behalf of students by:

  • Consulting with students about appropriate, reasonable accommodations for their workplace, housing, and courses.

As The Washington Center continues to lease property on a term-by-term basis, we continue to create and improve accommodations in new apartment buildings, new internship placements and new classrooms. Each student will come to the program with different accommodation needs. By filling out an Application for Services form and consulting with the Disability Services Coordinator as early as possible, students will have a better chance of having their accommodation requests met before arrival in Washington , D.C. Due to the design and short time frame of our program, not every accommodation request can be met.
  • Coordinating auxiliary aids and services including ASL Interpreters, CART, readers, brailing, adaptive technology (hardware and software), extended time/untimed tests and other accommodations.
  • Serving as an advocate and/or mediator for students with other faculty, internship supervisors and professors.
  • Providing city and Metro orientations for students.

Education and Outreach

The Disability Services Coordinator provides training and expertise regarding disability issues to prospective students/families, campus community, and other organizations by:

  • Responding to inquiries from prospective students or their families.
  • Communicating information regarding program activities and services to students.
  • Conducting outreach activities for prospective interns.
  • Helping students apply and gain credit for their internships by working with their home institutions, vocational rehabilitation and other support systems.
  • Educating administration, faculty, supervisors and professors regarding accommodations, auxiliary aids and disability awareness.

Consultation/Collaboration

The Disability Services Coordinator works with the campus or community personnel and agencies regarding students with disabilities or disability-related issues by:

  • Acting as a liaison with other relevant state, local, or community resources including the American Association of People with Disabilities.
  • Collaborating with the other Washington Center staff to ensure access to facilities and programs.
  • Gathering information related to adaptive technology to ensure accessibility.
