Fostering and Enhancing the Students' Academic Learning Experiences through Academic Seminars
The Washington Center will be open Wednesday, October 31. Both Residential and Academic Facilities have power and we recommend students to report to their internship sites tomorrow, or call/email their internship site supervisors to ask if they should report their internship tomorrow. Programming and classes will run as scheduled. Headquarters will also be open tomorrow.

The U.S.-Panama Initiative and Ford Global Scholars fall interns attended an informational programming event at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) with Teresa Buerkle, Information Officer for North America at UN FAO's DC office. Their is ensuring people all over the world have regular access to quality food that will help them lead an active and healthy lifestyle. TWC interns learned that there are four specific areas where the organization focuses it's efforts:
During the second SMLS of the semester, fall interns were given the opportunity to witness the spirit of true bipartisanship. TWC hosted Tom Daschle, former U.S. Senator from South Dakota and former Majority and Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate. The event was moderated by Larry Korb, former advisor on the Reagan-Bush election committee and a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress.
Estelle S. Kohn, J.D. hosts TWC interns each semester as an internship supervisor while working in her two roles as Deputy Director & Legal Internship Supervisor for the National Whisteblowers Center (NWC) and Legal Internship Administrator for the law firm of Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto, LLP (KKC). She helps TWC interns placed at these internship sites delve deeper into the world of social justice by often providing them with the opportunity to work on high-profile cases.
Rob Richie, Executive Director of FairVote, and several other guests came together to discuss the "Evolution of Presidential Debates." The guest speakers discussed the candidates' performances in the first two presidential debates between President Obama and Mitt Romney in addition to analyzing prior presidential debates.

Thom Mozloom is the founder and president of The M Network, a branding and advertising agency based in Miami, Florida. Mozloom talked about campaign ads during the "Evolution of Political Advertising" class.

TWC’s Professional Development Lunch Series went to press at The Washington Post when 15 Media and Communications interns enjoyed a “beyond the headlines” tour of one of the country’s leading newspapers.
The Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Francisco J. Sanchez, spoke to fall 2012 interns as the featured speaker for TWC's October 15th Simpson-Mineta Leadership Series (SMLS). During the event, he discussed what first sparked his interest in public service and the duties of his current position at the International Trade Administration (ITA).
