The piece features two alumni, Geoff Schaefer ('07) and Katie O'Connell ('05), who reminisce about their days as interns in Washington, D.C. Virginia Students Meet Rep. Wolf

Washington Center interns from Virginia met with Rep. Frank Wolf’s legislative staff at the Cannon House Office Building.  The students, who attend McDaniel College and Dickinson College, were able to speak with the staffer about his role in Rep. Wolf’s office and the public policy process. In addition to this visit, students sat in on the Representative's subcommittee hearing on Commerce, Justice and Science.

University of Iowa Students Meet Rep. Loebsack

TWC interns from Iowa had the opportunity to meet with Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA) and a member of his legislative staff in the Longworth House Office Building.  The students were able to speak about various state and national concerns in addition to policy issues such as the jobs act, affordable health care act, veterans affairs and the GI Bill. The experience expanded the student’s knowledge on several issues that affect their home state of Iowa, such as bipartisan support of the Jobs Act bill and other concerns such as homelessness affected a large number of veterans in Iowa.

 

University of Pikeville Liaison Establishes Scholarship Fund

Under Secretary of Commerce Speaks to International Students

After meeting with the President of Brazil, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Franciso Sanchez, met with TWC students participating in the Governors and Prudential programs at TWC's Residential and Academic Facility. He discussed key topics such as competitiveness, innovation, economic growth and access.

Alumni Networking Reception With Christie Nightingale

TWC's Alumni Networking Reception took place at the Residential Academic Facility. The networking event included a diversity of alumni and current spring interns, in addition to one of the most unique speakers that TWC has ever hosted: matchmaker and 1984 TWC alumna, Christie Nightingale, who runs Premier Match. Premier Match is an upscale, matchmaking service with locations in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

The Washington Center hosted Former Vice President, Dick Cheney, for the Alan K. Simpson-Norman Y. Mineta Leaders Series (SMLS). Only a month after his heart transplant, Dick Cheney was the featured speaker during a one-hour discussion moderated by senior producer of C-SPAN, Steve Scully.

 

TWC Interns Hear From Power Couple, Jim and Kate Lehrer

Spring interns enjoyed their second SMLS of the semester, which featured the power couple, Jim and Kate Lehrer.

 

Jim Lehrer has quite the resume, working as the executive producer and host of "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS. Jim has also moderated 11 presidential debates and has won numerous awards for his work in journalism.

 

Kate Lehrer has written four novels in addition to short stories, essays and book reviews. She has also been a frequent panelist on the Diane Rehm Show's "Reader's Review" on National Public Radio.

 

Tennessee Students Meet Senators Corker and Alexander

TWC interns from Tennessee met with the Honorable Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, two U.S. Senators from Tennessee, at their weekly Constituents breakfast.

 

The TWC students, who attend Furman University, Austin Peay State University and Tennessee Technological University, spoke with the Senator’s staff members about various concerns and policy issues concerning Tennessee’s recent No Child Left Behind waiver policies. The students learned more about the Senators positions on the budget, taxes and education.
