Job Description

The Business Development Manager is responsible for working with the Office of Internship Site Relations staff to identify and develop strategic relationships with new internship sites/agencies, with the goal of increasing new business by 5-10% per fiscal year. He/she will be responsible for implementing a marketing and public relations campaign for internship sites, developing marketing events, and creating a network of supporters. The Business Development Manager will be responsible for monitoring D.C. trends in internships with regards to areas of interest, shifts in demands from agencies, and government/DOL regulations. Additionally, this position will oversee the vetting of new internship sites as per TWC guidelines as well as managing relationships with our agency partners including stewardship of the Supervisor Advisory Board. Approximately 75% of time will be spent on business development.

 

Essential Functions

Business Development/Client Relations

  • Manage and grow our internship sites at 5-10% per year based on a thorough and ongoing analysis of the gap between the interns’ identified areas of interest and the availability of placement sites.
  • Oversee agency orientation at the beginning of each semester.
  • Develop strategic relationships with agencies to expand internship placements especially suited for international students.
  • Oversee vetting procedures and compliance efforts for internship sites. Ensure that due process is followed for vetting new sites through in-person site visits and supervisor meetings before a site is brought on board. Ensure that existing sites are quality checked with the Program Advisor site visit with appropriate notations being made in our systems.
  • Provide existing and potential agencies with excellent client relations by answering questions and providing information in a timely manner.

Marketing/Public Relations (for Internship Sites)

  • Work in very close collaboration with the Communications Department to implement the goals of the marketing and public relation plans for internship sites, including developing marketing materials.

Others

  • Maintain and update all database materials for institutional propriety.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of a system that tracks and manages all agency relationships.
  • Participate in limited recruiting trips.

Education and Experience

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered:

  • Advanced degree required (MBA or similar preferred)
  • 3-5 years work experience
  • Experience working with the international businesses, business development, sales, marketing
  • Experience working with college students preferred

Internships

Semester integrated academic and work experiences in government, corporations and nonprofit organizations. Each internship is tailored to provide meaningful work experiences that will enhance students’ resumes and help launch their careers. Most internships are in Washington, D.C., but there are also opportunities abroad in London, England and Sydney, Australia. Additionally, students take academic courses and attend special programming during their time at TWC.

 

Academic Seminars

These intensive learning experiences are focused on specific topics, such as National Security, the Presidency and the Middle East Peace Process. Past seminars have included visits to such locations as Capitol Hill, CNN, the Newseum, embassies and many others. Seminar events have featured such respected speakers as Ted Koppel, Discovery Channel; Andrea Mitchell, NBC News; Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee; and others.
