Academic Program Advisor, Business and Global Trade
Job Description
The Academic Program Advisor is a key role for delivering on The Washington Center (TWC)’s promise to students to provide them with a transformational experience – setting them on a course of achievement, leadership and civic responsibility. In this role, the Academic Program Advisors are responsible for working directly with college and university students to provide excellent customer service, supervision, and advisement through the leadership forum curriculum and internship experience.
Essential Functions
Student Learning/Instruction
- Create program syllabus outlining assignments, rubrics, and learning outcomes.
- Provide regular and consistent feedback and critique on assignments throughout the semester including, but not limited to the assignments outlined in the syllabus.
- Guide up to 40 students per semester in a themed cohort through an integrated experience incorporating academic learning, leadership, civic engagement and professional achievement.
- Host orientation sessions three times a year to prepare students for academic rigor as well as professional development impacts in their internship.
- Lead small group meetings at least 4-5 times per semester focusing on integrative learning, highlighting speaker series, cohort-specific programming, pillars and other topics.
- Debrief with students on current topics impacting cohort field.
- Plan at least 8-10 program events each semester that complement the internship experience and enhance the student experience.
- Play active role in TWC programs including, but not limited to, orientation, commencement, and the Simpson-Mineta Leaders Series (SMLS).
Student Experience
- Serve as a member of a TWC Pillar Committee to design and implement programs and special events in professional achievement, leadership, or civic engagement.
- Monitor student/supervisor relationship for professional development and enhancement of professional skill sets.
- Serve as a liaison between the student and the internship supervisor for problems that may occur.
- Develop relationship with internship supervisor and internship site that promotes TWC and provides an opportunity to guide the supervisor’s role in educating students in a professional setting. Provide documented feedback to the Office of Internship Site Relations (OISR) on this.
Student Advisement
- Mentor students while they are in the program, outlining and monitoring learning goals, and overall progress throughout the semester.
- Provide individualized counseling for students throughout the internship experience.
Administrative
- Recruit on average between 3 to 5 schools to share TWC’s message.
- Provide OISR with updates and briefings on current internship sites as well as potential new host sites.
- When necessary, provide background information to and coordinate with campus liaisons regarding student issues.
Education and Experience
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered:
- Masters degree in Business and Finance related fields.
- One to three years of experience in working with college students in advising, mentoring, or supervision capacities within specific area desired.
- Ability to conduct training programs/seminars/workshops on relevant educational topics.

- Demonstrated understanding of diversity issues within a higher education and professional environment, and ability to actively address situations to ensure cultural and global competency.
- Proven ability to articulate organizational objectives and development goals.
- Independent judgment and initiative.

The Washington Center offers two types of programs:
Internships
Semester integrated academic and work experiences in government, corporations and nonprofit organizations. Each internship is tailored to provide meaningful work experiences that will enhance students’ resumes and help launch their careers. Most internships are in Washington, D.C., but there are also opportunities abroad in London, England and Sydney, Australia. Additionally, students take academic courses and attend special programming during their time at TWC.
Academic Seminars
These intensive learning experiences are focused on specific topics, such as National Security, the Presidency and the Middle East Peace Process. Past seminars have included visits to such locations as Capitol Hill, CNN, the Newseum, embassies and many others. Seminar events have featured such respected speakers as Ted Koppel, Discovery Channel; Andrea Mitchell, NBC News; Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee; and others.
