The Washington Center Partners With United States Coast Guard in Experiential Education
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is pleased to announce a new partnership with the United States Coast Guard to provide a structured academic internship program for students in Washington and various Coast Guard offices across the country.
There are currently nine students from all over the country enrolled in the new program. Linh Cao from The University of California at Los Angeles, Hung Diep from Old Dominion University, Breunde Henderson from Norfolk University, Susan Millard from Gloucester County College, Shatari Pinson from DePaul University, Michelle Reyes from Hawaii Pacific University, Ricky Sethi from the University of California at Riverside, Adam Thorne from the University of Washington, and Joe Zelasney also from the University of Washington are all enrolled in the US Coast Guards Internship program for the fall 2006 semester.
“The United States Coast Guard is pleased to be able to offer professional development opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students from The Washington Center. We look forward to the years ahead” Esteban Morales Minority Serving Institutions Program Manager from the US Coast Guard stated.
It is an exciting time for the nine students who accepted offers for internships across the country. From Seattle, Washington to Norfolk, Virginia students have been put into internships covering several subject areas such as physics, public relations, engineering, and accounting. These intensive internships will award them 12-15 hours of academic credit through their home university. As well as the on-the-job training, they are also completing an academic course conducted through The Washington Center each Monday afternoon.
“The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is very pleased with the opportunity to help expose students to the very important work of the Coast Guard and develop students into civically engaged individuals” Dr. Jennifer Clinton, Vice President of Federal Relations and Operations shared. “These new opportunities will open many doors for the numerous students that want to take part in internships that are closer to home without missing out on the training provided through this experience,” she added.
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, educational nonprofit founded in 1975. The Washington Center serves hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to develop professional and leadership skills, academic awareness, in Washington, D.C. for academic credit.
