Africa Initiative Fellowship Graduates Its First Class
Through a strategic partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, The Washington Center established the Africa Initiative Fellowship in 2005 to make the participation of students from Sub-Saharan Africa in Washington Center programs possible. Three of nearly 40 candidates were chosen for the Fellowship:Florence Attah of Nigeria , Wendy Nimako-Boateng of Ghana , and Bontsi Morewane of Botswana .They attended the fall semester 2005 internship program lasting 15 weeks.
“Lessons inculcated in me during my semester in Washington have been multifarious and extremely valuable, some of which cannot be taught in the classroom. Some of these lessons are: independence, maturity, managing on a tight budget, and also learning to live with people from entirely different cultures and backgrounds. Having now completed my degree in political science at the end of my internship, I intend to finish up with my National Service at home in Ghana ,” writes Wendy Nimako-Boateng, who interned with the Office of Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA).
“Oxfam has been a gateway that has ushered me into a world of living to serve others and not just yourself. My perspective has been broadened in the sense that there are now several career paths that I have begun to look into. I have also had the opportunity to interact with college student groups striving to develop globally minded people. With this experience, I could easily pursue graduate studies in agriculture, international studies, public policy, journalism, or even translation and interpretation. The options are now limitless,” writes Bontsi Morewane who interned with Oxfam America .
“The experience I acquired in Washington , D.C. from working with the EPA's scientific experts and human resource specialists helped me to gather a strong base of theoretical knowledge on public health issues. My community service activity with the Horton's Kids Foundation has broadened my overall cultural awareness about the United States . In the future I hope to earn a master's degree in either public health administration or in epidemiology. This will put me on the right track in order to be a professional in the world of environmental safety,” according to Florence Attah who interned with the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Africa Initiative Fellowship is one of several international initiatives developed by The Washington Center since 1996. “Among the reasons we work to bring international students into our programs is to expose the world to our own U.S. students through the eyes of other interns from around the globe. Africa is a region our students hear little about, yet many global issues are Africa-centered, such as energy, HIV, ethnic tension, poverty and famine. It seems important that the development of young global leaders include an understanding of what is happening in the continent,” explains Arleen Ramirez Borysiewicz., Washington Center senior vice president for external affairs.
