Establishes Scholarships for International Students
Washington, D.C. – The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is pleased to announce the creation of its International Leaders Awards. The scholarship is available for international undergraduates in honors programs of colleges and universities outside the United States.
“Over the years, The Washington Center has succeeded in expanding its enrollment to the international community. We are pleased that more than fifteen percent of all Washington Center interns are students from around the world. Through private sector support, we appreciate the opportunity to build a global community of college students who will be tomorrow’s global leaders,” said Michael B. Smith, president of The Washington Center.
The International Leaders Awards will provide opportunities for students from around the world to participate in full-time internships with organizations in Washington, D.C., that represent career fields in which they are interested. They will also participate in rigorous academic training provided by The Washington Center. Educational programs include lecture series, congressional breakfasts, small-group discussions and other cultural, academic, and professional and leadership training experiences. Participants meet local, national and international leaders and participate in educational site visits and embassy tours.
Mohammed Alhassan, an international intern during the fall 2006 semester, had this to say about his experience: “I consider my participation in TWC’s internship program in Washington, D.C. a very rare and timely opportunity, and for that matter, a gold-mine of opportunities to be fully taken advantage of. My expectations about this internship were far exceeded, considering the fact that within a time frame of three and a half months I was exposed to a wide array of rich cultural, professional, academic, political and social experiences that have left me with unimaginably enormous benefits…I now feel strategically positioned to pursue my professional dreams to limits of my choice and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ghana, my home country.”
The International Leaders Awards will help cover the program cost of the participation of up to nine international students in The Washington Center Internship Program in the spring or fall of 2008, in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, non-profit educational organization founded in 1975. Its mission is to prepare college and university students for civic leadership through experiential education. In this way, The Washington Center seeks to promote future leadership for the private, public and nonprofit sectors of society. It has served more than 35,000 students from close to 1,000 colleges and universities located in the United States and around the world.
