The Washington Center Awarded Contract with The U.S. Department of Transportation

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 24, 2008 – The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars announces it has been awarded a contract with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to manage the Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG).  This five year contract will allow The Washington Center to provide between 80 to 100 college students with internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. and across the country in 22 locations.

The 10-week STIPDG provides college students with opportunities to sharpen their research, written, and oral presentation skills while receiving real-world work experiences.  Interns will participate in field trips to National transportation projects and facilities; conferences, workshops, decision-making meetings, and special events specific to their work assignments; and a DOT Career Fair specifically for STIPDG participants.  The program’s aim is to provide underrepresented groups such as women, persons with disabilities, and ethnically diverse individuals with summer opportunities in the field of transportation.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to focus on this diverse population of college students. The Washington Center prides itself on bringing together students from all backgrounds to learn about the rich intellectual and cultural diversity that each student brings to the total Washington Center student population and the agencies in which they work," said Jennifer Clinton, chief operating officer of The Washington Center.
