Former U.S. Congressman Richard A. Gephardt Elected to
The Washington Center’s Board of Directors
Washington, D.C. – The Washington Center, a leading provider of internships and academic seminars, announced the appointment of former U.S. Congressman Richard Gephardt to its board of directors. Congressman Gephardt is senior counsel at the global law firm DLA Piper, an active consultant for Goldman Sachs, and a former prominent American politician. He also serves as the advisory board chairman of the Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis. An accomplished lawmaker and leader, Congressman Gephardt brings more than three decades of experience to The Washington Center. “Dick's vast experience in public service will be a valuable asset as we advance The Washington Center's mission,” said Alan J. Blinken, chair of the board of directors.
Congressman Gephardt retired in January 2005 after serving Missouri ’s third congressional district for 28 years. In his first year in Congress, he was appointed to the House Ways and Means and Budget Committees, where he became a national leader on health care, trade, and tax fairness. He was the leader of the House Democrats for nearly 14 years, serving as House majority leader from 1989 to 1994 and minority leader from 1995 to 2003. In those roles, he emerged as one of the Democratic party's chief strategists and spokespersons on many major issues.
Congressman Gephardt sought the Democratic nomination in the 1988 and 2004 presidential races, framing his campaign on economic issues, strengthening American families, universal healthcare, pension reform, public school reform, energy independence, and trade policy.
“We are very excited to have Dick Gephardt join our board,” said Michael B. Smith, president of The Washington Center. “The addition of Dick Gephardt to The Washington Center's board of directors will provide our organization practical experience and knowledge on the intersections between public policy and global competitiveness, and how we can best prepare our college students to be among our new generation of global leaders.”
