Gala 2008: Engaging Voices in a Time of Change

Ford Motor Company to be Presenting Sponsor

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is proud to announce that longtime partner Ford Motor Company will serve as Presenting Sponsor for Gala 2008: Engaging Voices in a Time of Change.

The Washington Center will host Gala 2008: Engaging Voices in a Time of Change on the evening of Monday, September 22, 2008. Gala 2008 pays tribute to the ways in which media and free speech contribute to a public discourse of knowledge and ideas that can better societies. The Washington Center will honor special individuals who have devoted their lives to this democratic principle. The event will be held at the Newseum, Washington, D.C.’s chic new interactive media and news museum, providing an exciting setting especially appropriate to the evening’s theme.

“The Washington Center is truly grateful to Ford Motor Company for both their sponsorship of this year’s Gala and their enduring commitment to making The Washington Center’s internship program financially accessible to all students wanting to participate,” said Mike Smith, president of The Washington Center.   
   
For more than 20 years, Ford Motor Company has partnered with The Washington Center to provide scholarship and program support in order to attract a diverse body of students from across the country and around the world. Most recently, Ford has expanded its support with a gift of $1 million dollars to establish the Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program. This new program will bring together students from South Africa, Brazil, Vietnam, India, and Russia to live, learn, and intern and intern in Washington, D.C. The first class of Ford Global Scholars will arrive at The Washington Center for the fall 2008 semester.

The substantial partnership between our organizations has provided invaluable opportunities for college students to participate in a truly unique educational experience in our nation’s capital. We hope that our new innovative Global Scholars program at The Washington Center will produce young leaders prepared to tackle tomorrow's challenges,” said Ziad Ojakli, group vice president of government and community relations at Ford Motor Company.

The opening reception for Gala 2008: Engaging Voices in a Time of Change will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a recognition program at 7:30 p.m. The events co-chairs are Mr. and Mrs. William C. Ford, Jr., executive chairman, Ford Motor Company; The Honorable and Mrs. Norman Y. Mineta, former U.S. secretary of transportation; PBS broadcast journalist, Ms. Judy Woodruff; and venerated White House correspondent, Ms. Helen Thomas.

Honorees for the evening include Bob Schieffer of CBS News and anchor of Face the Nation, who will accept the Lifetime Achievement Award; Brian Lamb, founder of C-SPAN, who will accept the Pillar Award for Civic Engagement; The Honorable James Clyburn (D-SC), House majority whip, who will accept the Pillar Award for Leadership; and The Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), the fourth-highest ranking Republican senator, who will accept the Pillar Award for Professional Achievement.

Regular deadline for Spring 2009 Semester has been extended to December 3, 2008.

Early deadline range for Summer 2009 Term, Quarter and Postgraduate began September 29, 2008.

Regular deadline for Spring 2009 Quarter is January 16, 2009.

Early deadline range for Fall 2009 Semester, Quarter and Postgraduate is January 23, 2009.

Competitive deadline for Summer 2009 Term, Quarter and Postgraduate is February 2, 2009.
