The Washington Center’s Gala 2007 – Making a World of Difference Honors Distinguished Leaders

Washington, D.C., October 17, 2007 – On Tuesday, October 16, close to 500 alumni, sponsors, and friends of The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars gathered at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. to celebrate and honor several distinguished leaders who have made a difference in the lives of young women and men in pursuit of excellence in higher education.

The Washington Center honored Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Senator Mel Martinez
(R-FL)
at the evening’s Congressional Tribute Reception.  The cornerstone of Senator Landrieu’s legislative priority is the education of the next generation of leaders.  Senator Martinez has been a steward of The Washington Center’s educational partnership in Florida.

Gala 2007 unveiled the Pillar Awards which represent the core principles of leadership, excellence and civic engagement highlighted in The Washington Center’s mission.  U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) was honored with the Award for Leadership.  Congressman Hoyer has been a long-time supporter of The Washington Center and has spoken to Washington Center interns on many occasions.  Governor Humberto Moreira Valdes of the State of Coahuila, Mexico received the Award for Civic Engagement.  His passion to contribute to the people of Coahuila has paved the way for many of the state’s young men and women to participate in the programs of The Washington Center.  University of Maryland-Baltimore County President Freeman Hrabowski III was presented with the Award for Professional Achievement.  His remarkable career includes published work on the achievement of African-Americans in higher education.

“The evening’s celebration embraced our growing global community and the ways in which The Washington Center can help build unity and prosperity for all people,” said Michael B. Smith, president of The Washington Center.

Gala 2007 was made possible by a generous contribution from Ford Motor Company.
