The Washington Center works to support the D.C. Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)WASHINGTON, D.C., June 30, 2008 This summer, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars participated in the DC Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), a program stemming from a partnership that the DC Chamber of Commerce has with the Department of Employment Services. The program’s goal is to provide 300 area youth with a minimum of ten weeks employment in private sector jobs, including paid pre-employment training prior to job placement. Washington Center employees, Shelly Heinrich, Mindy Snedeker, and Nick Catanzaro, are among the members of the Workforce Readiness Institute, which provides a week-long preparation and orientation to the SYEP. All three of them worked with the DC Chamber of Commerce and the other Workforce Readiness Institute committee members to coordinate orientation week. The week-long orientation included sessions on topics such as networking, interviewing skills, and resume writing. Through the SYEP, The Washington Center and its staff is able to give back to the community in a way that also supports The Washington Center’s mission, which is to provide an integrated academic and work experience to prepare college students and professionals for lives of achievement and civic engagement. The DC Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Youth Employment Program, now in its 2nd week, looks forward to having a huge impact on the DC high school and college-aged youth. |
