The Washington Center Announces Fall 2006 Line Up for the Presidential Lecture Series

The Washington Center is pleased to announce a line up of distinguished speakers for the Fall Semester / Quarter 2006 Presidential Lecture Series. The first session of the series will begin Monday, September 25. Throughout the fall semester (August 30 to December 16). The Washington Center will schedule up to six prominent leaders, who will address close to 400 internship participants, with their perspective on current national and global public policy issues. The confirmed fall speakers are:

Monday, September 25 Ambassador Carlos de Icaza, Embassy of Mexico
Monday, October 23 Colman McCarthy, Center for Teaching Peace
Monday, November 6 Mike McCurry, Public Strategies Washington Inc.
Monday, November 13 Secretary Elaine Chao, U.S. Department of Labor
Monday, December 11 Secretary James Nicholson, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

All lectures are held from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Yates Auditorium of the U.S. Department of Interior, located at 18th and C Streets, NW, Washington. D.C. Speaker presentations are followed by a question and answer session with students.

The Washington Center is honored to welcome Ambassador Carlos de Icaza, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, as the first distinguished speaker for this semester’s Presidential Lecture Series, on Monday, September 25. Ambassador de Icaza, a 35-year career diplomat, joined the Mexican Foreign Service in 1970. He was promoted to the rank of ambassador in 1982. He presented his Credentials as Ambassador of Mexico to the United States of America on March 31, 2004. Ambassador de Icaza has represented Mexico in several multilateral meetings of the United Nations, the Organization of the American States, the International Labor Organization and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Among the topics the ambassador will address on Monday is the contested July presidential election in Mexico; border and immigration issues; and Mexico’s advances under NAFTA. Of nearly the 400 fall semester students in The Washington Center, approximately 15 percent are from abroad, ranging from Mexico, Canada, Korea and Sub-Saharan Africa, Greenland. With the increasing number of international students enrolled in the internship program, The Washington Center is pleased to include foreign dignitaries among the speakers in the Presidential Lecture Series, in order to provide an international perspective on current on global issues.

Deadline for Fall 2008 Washington, D.C.-London Internship Program is extended to May 30, 2008

Regular deadline for Fall Semester, Quarter and Postgraduate 2008 is June 13, 2008.

Competitive deadline for Spring 2008 Semester, Winter and Spring Quarters and Postgraduate is September 29, 2008.
