Iraq's Ambassador to the United States Speaks with Washington Center Students

His Excellency Samir Shakir Mahmood Sumaidaie, Ambassador of Iraq to the United States, spoke with The Washington Center’s International Conflicts and Negotiations Seminar students on the emerging relations between the United States and Iraq and global leadership in the age of turmoil in the Middle East and beyond.

“The fight inside Iraq isn’t an Iraqi-Iraqi fight, but an international one,” Ambassador Sumaidaie said. “We are at the eye of the storm where the conflict is the sharpest. I am in a position representing issues that are, in my opinion, the same as that of the United States,” the Ambassador explained.

The Ambassador focused the rest of his presentation on Iraq’s potential to be a peaceful influence for the region and the global community. He recognized the importance of leadership development that organizations like The Washington Center provide for students and young professionals.

“Ambassador Sumaidaie’s presentation was extremely informative and helpful to the students.  We were honored to host him and look forward to the day when millions of Iraqis are able to live in peace, be secure within their borders, and free from both the dictatorship that characterized the past several decades and the terrorist insurgents of today” Mike Smith, president of The Washington Center remarked.

The Ambassador’s words left a memorable mark on the minds of the students. “I learned that even though you’re on one particular side, it’s important to view all sides for a solution,” said International Conflict Seminar student Keith Dancy from Kean University in New Jersey.

The International Conflicts and Negotiations Seminar, directed by program manager Andrea Barron, focused on presenting both sides of several controversial issues: the war in Iraq, the humanitarian disaster in the Darfur region of Sudan, and U.S. relations with Cuba. The seminar included an intensive series of lectures and a two-day simulation where student “delegates” negotiated U.S.-Cuba relations in the post-Castro era.
