The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is chosen as a Cooperating Organization by the International Studies Association (ISA).
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars announces that the International Studies Association, a membership organization of over 3,000 members in North America and abroad, and one of the most respected and widely known academic organizations in the field, has granted The Washington Center the status of a Cooperating Organization.
Cooperating Organizations are a network of international studies groups accredited by ISA to promote communication and help develop contacts among specialists and practitioners in order to facilitate scientific and cultural exchange. Cooperating Organizations are invited to participate in ISA activities, including the annual convention and various international conferences and joint workshops. Cooperating Organizations are entitled to a quota of panels at the annual convention and international conferences. Other benefits of cooperating status include reciprocity in web site promotion, publicity and announcements, and shared Internet resources.
“This new relationship with the International Studies Association is a natural evolution of our international growth and diversity. For example, in 1996, The Washington Center developed the nation's only full-time NAFTA internship program, bringing students from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to Washington study the impact of the tri-lateral trade agreement and intern with relevant agencies,” says Dr. Eugene Alpert, senior vice president at The Washington Center.
Today, at least 20% of The Washington Center's interns come from Canada, Latin American and Asia. Starting this fall, The Washington Center is starting an Africa initiative.
The Washington Center is often the internship program of choice for both international students and students majoring in fields related to international affairs because of its reputation for breadth and depth of internship placement options. With over 15 full-time program advisors among a full-time staff of 62, there are likely to be more choice placements available in their field. Also, The Washington Center pays close attention to early deadlines for competitive placements, such as those in the U.S. Dept. of State and arranges internships and site visits to many of the embassies located in Washington, D.C.
Alumni of The Washington Center include state legislators, congressional chiefs of staff and a member of Congress, the Hon. Dennis Cardoza of California.
“With close to 1500 interns a year in our program, The Washington Center is in contact with literally thousands of placement sites. We know where the best internships are, and international affairs students benefit from our incomparable resources,” says Dr. Alpert.
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is a nonprofit, educational program that provides full-time internships and short-term academic seminars for college students. Its mission is to educate college and university students for civic leadership through experiential education activities. Founded in 1975, The Washington Center has had over 34,000 students from over 1,000 college and universities in the U.S. and abroad who have participated in its programs. Internationally recognized for its pioneering efforts in experiential education, The Washington Center is actively involved in diversifying its student body with participants from Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
The International Studies Association, founded in 1959, promotes research and education about international affairs. With well over three thousand members in North America and around the world, ISA is the most respected and widely known scholarly association in this field. The ISA cooperates with 53 international studies organizations in 32 countries, and is a member of the International Social Science Council, and has nongovernmental consultative status with the United Nations.
