Comcast Funds Maryland Students for Internships in Congress

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is proud to announce the creation of its new Diversity in Congress Scholarship through a partnership with Comcast. The scholarship, made possible by a $25,000 grant from Comcast and a grant from the State of Maryland named in honor of the late Senator Pete Rawlings, will provide $5,000 scholarships to five students from diverse backgrounds attending the four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the state of Maryland.  Participating schools include Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, and University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. The $5,000 scholarships will partially defray The Washington Center’s program and housing costs for selected recipients.

“Education has always been a cornerstone of Comcast’s community outreach.  We are thrilled that our outreach includes study and work for college students to better understand the Federal legislative process,” said Earle Jones, Vice President of Federal Affairs for Comcast’s Eastern Division. “As we strive to deliver top-notch products and services to our customers, it’s important that we also continually connect students to the long-lasting impact of a quality education.”

The Comcast Diversity in Congress scholars will participate in The Washington Center’s Congressional Leadership Program during the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters. The Congressional Leadership Program is a specially designed program of study and work experiences to guide students to a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. Congress and the legislative process. Selected students will be given the opportunity to receive academic credit from their home institutions while participating in a four and one-half day per week internship in the offices of U.S. senators and congressional representatives.

“The Washington Center is excited to strengthen our commitment to diversity through the generosity of Comcast. These scholarships will serve as a new opportunity and an invaluable means for The Washington Center to provide financial assistance to students with diverse interests and talents, and from different cultures, who wish to prepare for lives of civic leadership and responsibility through challenging internships on Capitol Hill. We thank Comcast for their support, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with them for the future,” said Arleen Ramirez Borysiewicz, senior vice president for external affairs at The Washington Center.
