Business Software Alliance Scholar Excels in InternshipBusiness Software Alliance scholar Alejandro Rivera, a graduating senior majoring in International Business at the Universidad del las Americas Puebla Mexico, completed his spring 2006 internship learning more about intellectual property and global business issues. Securing a competitive placement with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) through The Washington Center, Rivera played a critical role in four significant program areas. “My placement has given me the opportunity to reach levels I never thought I had the skills for,” Rivera said. During his internship, Rivera’s assignments involved such BCLC programs as the Business and Society Relations, Business Disaster Assistance and Recovery, Business and Education and Global Engagement. Rebecca Freyvogel, Rivera’s agency supervisor, believes that, “Alejandro went over and beyond any expectations; through his support, the BCLC was able to carry out several successful programs.” Rivera’s largest contribution came in his work with the 2006 Partnership Conference on Strengthening Organization Values and Stakeholder Trust. Assisting in the coordination of companies like McAfee, Lockheed Martin and CSR Wire, Rivera’s work revolved around the coordination of panel presentations, registration logistics and overall programming. “Interning with The Washington Center gave me the opportunity to enter the business world,” Rivera said. Through the conference, he was able to explore information technology issues and networked with participants and panelists. The Business Software Alliance's scholarships for college interns are an important component of its higher education initiative, introduced in 2003. The scholarship program, offered to outstanding students attending The Washington Center, helps raise awareness among college students about the importance of respecting intellectual property rights for creative works such as music, motion pictures, and computer software. “BSA commends The Washington Center for providing students with invaluable opportunities to work in the private and government sectors,” said Robert Holleyman, president and CEO for BSA. “BSA is pleased to support these internships which allow young people entering the 21st century workforce to expand their technical knowledge and online awareness.” For more information, contact: Javier Lopez Robyn Dickey The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, nonprofit educational organization founded in 1975.
