BP Alaska Funds Scholarships for College Students

Alaska’s Forth-Ninth State Fellows Program to Participate in the Honors Program Seminar Fellowships to be Awarded for Summer Internship Program

BP Exploration, Alaska has awarded The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars major funding to support the participation of college students from Alaska in the “Leaders on Leadership ‘06” honors seminar and summer internship program in 2006.

“This gift is the first of its kind for college students from Alaska. More than 1,500 college students participate in our seminar and internship programs each year, with the majority in need of financial aid. We thank BP Alaska for forging a winning partnership with The Washington Center that will benefit up to fifteen Alaskans next year,” remarks Arleen Ramirez Borysiewicz, senior vice president at The Washington Center.

Twelve college students, several of whom will represent the University of Alaska-Anchorage’s Forty-Ninth State Fellows Option of the UAA Honors Program, will participate in The Washington Center’s honor program seminar entitled, Leaders on Leadership ’06, May 13-20, 2006.

In addition to this one-week seminar, participants, accompanied by select faculty from the University, will spend an additional week to explore issues of public policy relevant to the state, through site visits, educational tours, and briefings. Policy themes of the environment, energy, public health and more will be explored. In addition, the BP Alaska funding offers three of Alaska’s college students full scholarships to participate in The Washington Center’s internship program in summer 2006. This unique opportunity aims to prepare emerging Alaskan leaders for ever-increasing leadership responsibilities in Alaska’s public, private, and the nonprofit sectors. Selected students will participate in a ten-week summer internship tailored to their interests, interact with key government representatives, and develop leadership skills and professional networks.

The generosity of BP Alaska demonstrates their commitment to developing new generations of dynamic leaders among Alaska’s youth. The experiential learning opportunity in Washington, D.C. will provide Alaska’s youth with the formative experiences that will serve and inspire them as Alaska’s next generation of leaders.

“We are committed to investing in Alaska and Alaskans. We see these scholarships as an investment that will reap benefits for many years to come by helping our future leaders to be knowledgeable and informed about important issues, about how government works, and about how they can participate in the public process. We are pleased to partner with The Washington Center and the University of Alaska to make this opportunity available to students from Alaska,” said Carla Beam, Director of Community Affairs at BP Alaska.
